Shorelands Preserve
Details
This event showcases The Nature Conservancy’s amazing Shorelands Preserve located west of Layton on the wetlands bordering the Great Salt Lake. Throughout the season approximately 167 different bird species are known to frequent this area to include Sandhill Cranes, Barn Owls, Northern Harrier Hawks, Redwing Blackbirds, Meadowlarks and Canada Geese. It is unclear what species we will see on Saturday; nevertheless, throughout the year, this is a terrific venue for birders, nature photography and anyone seeking a fun change of pace to trekking traditional trails. Bring your bird books, binoculars, and cameras if you have these interests. We’ve observed deer moving throughout the wetlands in the past. Our itinerary is to stroll around the Preserve’s one-mile-long boardwalk and climb a three-story tall observation tower the Nature Conservancy has constructed to showcase this unique ecosystem.
The Shoreline Preserve is a great place to get outside in nature anytime Wasatch trails are muddy! In addition, it is a marvelous place to bring grandchildren and other little people to introduce them to the out of doors in a civilized environment. Elementary schools bring field trips here. Plan on about 60-90 minutes at the Preserve. Meet Elliott in the parking lot at the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve at 10:00am. Bring insect repellent just in case. No dogs.
Trailhead Information: In Layton drive Gentile Street west to 3200 West and turn south. The Shorelands Preserve is located about 1.3 miles south. There are restrooms at the trailhead. Trailhead parking is limited.
