This scenic reservoir located approximately 15-miles east of Ogden is a great place to paddle. Nestled in steep-walled canyons, Causey Reservoir is home to Kokanee Salmon along with varieties of Rainbow, Cutthroat, Brown, Splake and Tiger Trout. Large birds of prey, mostly hawks and eagles, are often seen soaring overhead and sometimes swooping down low to the water to fish. Our itinerary is to explore most of the channels which make up the reservoir and go ashore a couple of times for paddle breaks, provided water levels make doing so realistic. In the past has been a 2.5-to-3.5-hour event on the water depending how far we explore the reservoir’s many channels. A key is to go early and be off the water before winds pick-up. This flat-water event is an out-and-back paddle so no portage or vehicle shuttle will be necessary. The water is chilly this time of year so everyone is encouraged to bring an extra set of clothes in a dry bag in case of a swim.

This activity is appropriate for boating enthusiasts who can supply their own equipment, and who can safely maneuver their boat in current to avoid navigation obstacles. Please check your equipment for serviceability and to ensure your boat is free of aquatic nuisance/invasive species; everyone will need to wear a PFD for this event. Boaters are responsible for their safety on the water. Trailhead parking is limited and fills-up quickly on weekends so we are going early. Plus, winds pick-up as the day warms so it is always wise to go early. Meet Elliott at Skull Crack Trailhead at Causey Reservoir at 8:00AM. There are restrooms at the TH.

Trailhead Information: From Huntsville drive SR-39 east about 8.4-miles to the turn-off to Causey Reservoir. Red Rock Grill marks this intersection. Turn right and follow this road 1.6-miles to the Causey dam turnoff. Drive across the dam and around to Skull Crack Trailhead.
