Text-based chatbots are the default for AI moderation in UX Research, but they can often feel cold and impersonal, leading participants to give low-effort, surface-level answers.
This session shares and discusses results from a paper by UXtweak Research published in Journal of Behavior Research Methods in which we tested whether a photorealistic, voice-driven AI avatar can outperform a standard chatbot as a research moderator.
What we'll cover:- Whether avatars get richer, more engaged responses than chatbots
- The "Uncanny Valley" effect and how it shaped participant trust
- Where AI moderation fits alongside human researchers, and where it doesn't
