Dark patterns are getting darker – and more widespread. Some even say they're widespread to the point of distorting design itself: it's no longer user experience, it's user exploitation. We gotta do something about it, and we gotta do it now.

Come listen to this talk to learn about:

  • why and when dark patterns are mostly used
  • how effective they actually are
  • how far some go in putting ethics aside
  • what researchers and regulators have been doing lately to expose and curb the ill practice
  • what the Humane Tech movement is and why it might be the last hope we have

SPEAKER

Our speaker for this event is Piotr Ślusarski. He's a content/UX writer with quite the background story:

I've always had a knack for writing. I started out as a freelance journalist and worked as one for almost 10 years, doing pieces for several press outlets – like Warsaw Business Journal or Bloomberg Businessweek Polska.

I mostly wrote about marketing, pop culture, and hi-tech: from brand extensions and hypnosis in focus groups through to smart clothes and in vitro meat.

Somewhere in between, I tried my hand at translations too. Eventually they wore me down, though I did manage to contribute to the English versions of two books on how to use origami to treat speech and movement disorders. Strange, I know.

Today I'm a content/UX writer at an IT company that does complex systems for banks and insurers. I still write longer texts: articles or case studies – but also shorter ones, like error messages or button copy. Writing in a clear, concise and useful way is one of the hardest things in this world – and that's why I consider UX writing the most interesting job that fate has given me.
