The best error message is the one that doesn’t exist. However, we can’t completely avoid error messages, so we need to focus on how we can prevent panic and make the error messages helpful. Even when an unknown error occurs, we can often say something more helpful than “unknown error”.

There are many good articles that explain the principles of a good error message text, but there isn’t much guidance on how you can get the information you need or work with stakeholders to make improvements. And what do you do when engineers add an “unknow error”, and they genuinely think there isn’t any information to give? Charlotte will tell you how she works to get information and to improve error scenarios, and she will share examples of how “unknown errors” could be turned into something more helpful.
