Located in North Vancouver about five kilometres north of Second Narrows, this protected area with plenty of natural beauty includes gentle trails, lush forests, a picnic area, gazebos, and a calm, scenic fishing lake called Rice Lake.

In the lush forest one can admire the towering trees sometimes draped with lichen, and the moss-covered forest floor. A bit further on the forest opens to views of Rice Lake.

There are several viewpoints at the lake with benches to relax and take in the natural beauty of the area. Rice Lake is a great location for artists, and those who just enjoy the relaxing environment there.
Even close to the picnic area where we’ll meet there are good spots to set up. Further on, there will be locations where you can view the forest or the lake through the trees, or set up an easel nearby (although you’d have to pack your easel about 1000 metres on gentle forest trails to get it to the lake). There will be many interesting locations to paint and draw!

Bring an easel or a folding chair or stool or just use one of the benches or picnic tables here. Bring your drawing and painting supplies, which can be as simple as a pencil and paper. You can bring whatever art supplies and media you prefer. The forecast is for good weather.

From Vancouver by car, head north over the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge, take exit 22B and continue straight onto Lillooet Road. The main parking lot is at the end of Lillooet Road, about a 15-minute drive from the bridge on the paved road, but give yourself lots of time because there are speed bumps. We'll meet at the Rice Lake Gate Picnic Area about 100 metres northwest of the main parking lot at 10:00 a.m. (note the earlier start time), and then spread out (some of us will walk the one kilometre through forest trails to Rice Lake), and return to meet to share our work at 1:00 p.m.
Washrooms: There are washrooms next to the parking lot at the end of Lillooet Road, and an outhouse at Rice Lake.

Public transit can get you from downtown Vancouver to close to the picnic area via the #210 Upper Lynn Valley Bus (with a 750-metre walk east along Evelyn Street, down Rice Lake Road, over the scenic Pipeline pedestrian bridge, and up the forest trail on the east bank of Lynn Creek that leads to the Rice Lake Gate Picnic Area... a bit of extra adventure and exercise that you may enjoy).

See you at the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve!
