Utah Series: Ashdown Gorge
Details
Questions or Comments: text Jim at 702-515-9824.
When you RSVP, please answer the 2 questions:
Q1. What is your cell number?
Q2. Are you willing to drive and take 3 passengers in your car? It is all paved road, 350 miles RT.
Carpooling is mandatory; each passenger must pay $20 to their driver for gas.
PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE HIKE DESCRIPTION! New participants will be required to sign a Waiver at the meetup location similar to the Disclaimer below.
This 5th annual hike is somewhat similar to the Virgin Narrows in Zion, but the water is not as deep and it's much less crowded. We will hike Ashdown Creek out and back. There will be numerous water crossings and actually hiking in the creek part of the time so your feet will get wet and stay wet. The water level will mostly be below your knees except a few times it may be mid-thigh. The water will be fairly cold but not numbing.
I just recommend old hiking boots and wool socks. Closed toe water shoes are next best but only if they don't have cutout holes which allow small rocks and pebbles to get inside and underfoot. High neoprene socks might keep your feet dry.
A wood hiking staff or trekking poles (with or without the rubber tips) are highly recommended due to repeatably crossing moving water.
It is mostly class 1 hiking but it's very rugged, with lots of rounded rocks in the water. There are a few logjams that require some class 2 scrambling. There are two waterfalls at the turn around location.
Bring a towel and extra footwear (sandals, flip-flops) to change into after the hike!
Trailhead: Ashdown Gorge (Cedar City, UT)
Distance: 9 miles
Elevation Gain: 1,000 feet
Altitude: 7,000 to 7,800 feet
Class: Class 1 trail with numerous creek crossings and a few logjams
Exposure: None
Difficulty: Strenuous and exhausting
Pace: Slow to Moderate
Duration: 12 hours (includes driving and a stop to eat on the way back)
My preferred post-hike eatery is Centro Woodfired Pizzeria in Cedar City.
The North Las Vegas meetup location will be sent by text to the number you provide when you RSVP. We will carpool to Cedar City, meet at the Maverik Station off I-15 at Hwy 15 (this is a restroom stop, not a gas stop), and caravan from there to the trailhead.
Nevada is Pacific Time; Utah is Mountain Time, one hour ahead.
A picture is worth a thousand words. So, here is a link from the last time we went. There are 109 photos posted plus a Goggle photo album.
