Work Party at Lehigh Crossing Park 7350 Víctor-Mendon Rd Vic

Details
New shoots of phragmites are beginning to appear, in shallow water. We will work along the western shoreline to reach out into the water and lop off the top of the new shoots trying to keep the tops of the phrags submerged below water. This should help slow the growth as the hollow stalks help the rhizomes get needed oxygen.
Please wear sturdy, preferably waterproof boots, work gloves, bring drinking water for yourself. Clippers or loppers may be helpful. I will have hand tools available for use. Park in the parking lot and walk to the pond where I will be. I will bring my car up with extra tools and supplies, and you may park near me on solid ground if you prefer.
The photo is of our native strawberry (Fragaria virginiana), just beginning to bloom. Many of these plants grow along the edge of the pond at the top of the berm around the pond. The fruits are tiny compared to our commercial strawberries, but have a wonderful, sweet strawberry taste. They are just coming into bloom this week. I am putting some of them around the two black cherry trees that we have planted along the west side of the pond.
