Our dialogue explores East Meets West: philosophies of medicine. This theme invites us to consider how different traditions view health and healing:
- Eastern philosophies — such as yoga, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine — emphasize balance, energy flow, prevention, and the integration of body, mind, and spirit.
- Western philosophies — grounded in anatomy, biology, and evidence-based science — emphasize diagnosis, treatment, and measurable outcomes.
These worlds are not opposed, but often complementary. For example:
- Yoga therapy is now integrated into physical rehabilitation programs.
- Acupuncture is used alongside Western pain management.
- Mindfulness and meditation support stress reduction and mental health, complementing traditional psychotherapy.
- Nutritional science is beginning to align with Ayurvedic concepts of food as medicine.
Guiding this opening conversation will be Becca Ellis, Doctor of Physical Therapy and yoga instructor, who works daily at the intersection of modern science and ancient practice.
Christopher Anderson is a Virginia Beach–based entrepreneur and wine storyteller. As founder of Joy of Wine Company, he blends his love of ritual, conversation, and community into gatherings that spark both reflection and connection.
