Jai Uttal é um indicado ao Grammy, artista de kirtan, multi-instrumentista e vocalista extático. É considerado um pioneiro na comunidade da ”World Music" com influências combinadas da Índia e do rock e jazz americanos. Jai tem liderado, ensinado e tocado World Music e kirtan — cantos sagrados da India— ao redor do mundo por mais de 50 anos, criando um ambiente seguro para as pessoas abrirem os seus corações e vozes.
Cresceu na cidade de Nova York e viveu numa casa cheia de música. Jai começou a estudar piano clássico aos sete anos de idade e mais tarde aprendeu a tocar banjo, gaita, violão e muitos outros instrumentos. Aos 17 anos ouviu música indiana pela primeira vez e dois anos depois mudou-se para a Califórnia, onde estudou com o famoso tocador de sarod, Ali Akbar Khan. Aos 18 anos Jai começou a fazer peregrinações regulares à Índia, vivendo entre os músicos de rua errantes de Bengala ‘Bauls of Bengals’ e cantando com os kirtan wallahs no templo do seu guru, Neem Karoli Baba.
Jai tornou-se uma influência líder na tradição Bhakti - considera-a o cerne da sua vida musical e espiritual.

About Jai Uttal
Jai Uttal is a Grammy-nominated kirtan artist, multi-instrumentalist, and ecstatic vocalist. He is widely regarded as a pioneer in the world music community, blending Indian devotional traditions with influences from American rock and jazz.
For more than 50 years, Jai has been leading, teaching, and performing world music and kirtan — the sacred chants of India — around the globe, creating a safe and welcoming space for people to open their hearts and voices.
He grew up in New York City in a home filled with music. Jai began studying classical piano at the age of seven and later learned to play banjo, harmonica, guitar, and many other instruments.
At 17 he heard Indian music for the first time. Two years later he moved to California, where he studied with the legendary sarod master Ali Akbar Khan.
At 18, Jai began making regular pilgrimages to India, living among the wandering street musicians of Bengal — the Bauls of Bengal — and singing with the kirtan wallahs in the temple of his guru, Neem Karoli Baba.
Jai eventually became a leading influence in the Bhakti tradition, which he considers the very heart of his musical and spiritual life.

As you wander through Lisbon’s historic streets, you will hear stories drawn from musical history and lived experience — tales of artists, resistance, migration, fado, jazz, rock, hip-hop, semba, morna, and the cultural movements that made Lisbon one of the world’s most musical cities.

You will stop at meaningful venues, small bars, cultural spaces, and open-air viewpoints. At each stop, you will discover the stories behind the sounds — some serious, some funny, all real.

This is a living, breathing musical experience: part walk, part storytelling, part music, and fully authentic.
