The Bay Model and Other Sausalito Sites Walk

Details

Now open for RSVPs. Bring a sack lunch. Cost of walk is $3 per adult & kids free. The Bay Model, bigger than 2 football fields, is an exact model of the S. F. Bay's currents. Though it was built for scientific study it is now open, for educational purposes, FREE to the public.

If you are going with us on the ferry try and be at the Golden Gate Ferry Terminal directly behind the SF Ferry Building Clock Tower at 10:15 AM to give a margin of error so you don't miss the ferry when it leaves at 10:40 AM. How to find me: I am a tall man, look like my photo, wear a big green hat, and will be holding a clipboard. It is a short walk from the Embarcadero BART Station to the Ferry Building.

After you buy a ticket and enter the ticket terminal you can find our group at the right (North end). If you don't find us in the terminal you can find us in the ferry at the top deck. Now is the time to get yourself "Clipper" formerly called "Translink" and you can CUT THE COST of the ferry trip by ALMOST HALF! The adult cash fare is $9.75 one way. For youth (6-18), seniors (65+)/disabled Medicare or approved ID: $4.75. Clipper Card adult: $5.00. Children under 6 are FREE.

Also, people may go to Sausalito by bus or any other way and join us in Sausalito. Our ferry is expected to arrive at Sausalito at 11:10 AM, near El Portal Street, but there is no terminal building. We will then walk to the nearby big water fountain at El Portal and Bridgeway, 11:15 AM, so that more people can join us. Then we will walk North.

If good weather we might walk to a big old house which was the hideout for notorious gangster Baby Face Nelson. We will tour the Bay Model until about 1:55 PM. People who wish to catch the 2:10 PM ferry back to SF will have to walk back by themselves as the group won't have time to get back there by then.

After visiting the Bay Model we will probably not visit Sausalito's small history museum as our group may not fit inside. Then we will explore the South side of Sausalito including what was Sally Stanford's restaurant, Valhalla which was a location in the Orson Welles movie "The Lady from Shanghai." Sally Stanford was San Francisco's most famous madam and also later became the elected Mayor of Sausalito. She also married a rich man and she died very rich in 1982.

Our group's scheduled return ferry will leave at 3:50 PM.

I encourage potential attendees to take public transportation and NOT drive as driving and parking in SF is very bad. If you have to drive the best parking I am aware of near the Ferry Building is at 250 Clay Street, the Golden Gateway Garage, but you will need validation from the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market which happens on Saturdays. I have a flyer that says the parking is $3 all day between 8 AM - 10 PM with validation.

Below is a trip planner that will show you how to get around the Bay Area on public transportation:
