About us
See legal disclaimer at bottom of text. EVERYONE MAY NOW JOIN THE GROUP EXCEPT THOSE FEW WHO WERE BANNED. Walking or hiking. Meet other local people who are interested in walking or hiking for fitness and learning about San Francisco's history, including its movie history.
This walking group is unique. It is primarily a health group with a dash of history talk for flavor. It is for people in average physical shape who need restroom stops and not for athletes or people with serious medical conditions.
We keep our group together. We go on many different urban walks, in the best areas, that vary greatly in amounts of climbing and history facts. We walk at a leisurely pace and enjoy the scenery.
Our walks are usually 5 to 7 miles and might be called urban hiking. Our routes are well planned with good restroom stops properly spaced. Though we mainly walk in SF we also walk in Oakland, Piedmont, Sausalito, Berkeley & Alameda.
We always take roll. Attendance has ranged from 1 to 112 on July 5th, 2015. Kids and cameras very welcome. Dogs and other pets are not welcome. Also, smoking is not allowed on the walks as this is a health group. Occasionally we visit science and nature places. 99 out of every 100 doctors say, "JOIN THIS GROUP!"
Our "group photo" was taken May 26th, 2018 at our "Berkeley Rose Garden & Cragmont Rock Park Walk."
Click on "Photos" near the top of the screen to see over 21,000 photos of our walks thanks to scores of our members.

The Corona Heights + 4 More Hills Walk
El Cafetazo, 3087 16th St, (between Caledonia St & Valencia St), San Francisco, CA, USLATEST UPDATES! Saturday's forecast is now: "Partly sunny, with a high of 61F." If you find you can't attend, please change your status to "not going" so the many people on our "waitlist" can move up to our "going list."
Free walk. This is one of my favorite walks of all time. We walked it many times over the years. One thing good about it is we walk on 5 hills with great views, but all of the hills are of moderate height, so it is only of moderate difficulty.
Now open for RSVPs. Get on the waiting list if full. Lots of members drop out. Attendance Max = 70. One guest is allowed per member if put on the RSVP. Bring a sack lunch and enough water to drink.
This walk starts and ends near the 16th Street BART Station at the cafe El Cafetazo, 3087 16th Street. One may buy food and drinks there. We gather there at 11:15 AM and at 11:30 AM start walking to our lunch spot, the Randall Junior Museum, arriving there a little after Noon. We will also enjoy visiting this free museum.
After lunch we walk over Corona Heights, 510', and then through the lovely Ashbury Heights neighborhood and up to the top of Mount Olympus, 570'. This walk has a lot of up and down walking including many stairs which will give attendees lots of exercise.
We then walk on to more hills and the views from these hills are spectacular. Also, there are lots of lovely flowers. There are more good things on this walk, such as a giant concrete slide that even adults enjoy.
The highest hill we will go over is Tank Hill which is 650 feet. Total distance is about 5 miles. I walk slow, 2 mph, but we won't have time to linger because our goal is to get back to our starting point at 4:30 PM. This walk is of moderate difficulty. None of SF's highest hills.
Photo at top was taken on this route. The dark blue flowers are from the giant flowers "Pride of Madera." It is a favorite of mine and also of the public as more of them are planted every year.
Another great thing of this walk is that the 3 tallest hills of the walk are all in the first half. Then we have a nice easy walk to the end.
Below is a link to 68 photos taken on our walk there July 5, 25:
The Corona Heights + 4 More Hills Walk (Jul 5, 2025) PhotosSometimes we get back to this walk's starting point exactly on time. However, I cannot guarantee it, and we might get back a little late.
This walking group is for humans only. No dogs or other animals allowed.

WE WALK THE PRESIDIO & GO INSIDE MORE BUILDINGS THAN BEFORE!
Presidio Transit Center, San Francisco, CA, USFree Walk. This is a new version of our walk in the Presidio. Our other version is great, but so is this one. The difference is this time we will be visiting as many free museums and other good free buildings we can enter. That will be helpful in the future if we encounter some rain.
We will gather in front of the Presidio's Transit Center at 215 Graham Street at 11:00 AM. We will start walking at 11:10 AM We will end the walk back here, our starting point, a little before 4:00 PM.
Try not to be late. We will be taking a different route than before and visit places where we have never visited before such as the Visitor Center of the Greater Farallones Association. Below link:
Visitor Center - Greater Farallones AssociationAttendance Max = 70. One guest is allowed per member if put on the RSVP.
For most attendees the best way to get there is probably to take the free PresidiGo bus. One can get on the bus from downtown SF at 2 spots: at 50 Beale Street at 10:30 AM or the bus stop on Drumm Street in front of the Hyatt Regency near Market Street at 10:32 AM.
The bus arrives at our starting point, at 10:55 AM and it will stop to pick up passengers at a couple of other stops along the way.
Below is a link to Saturday's schedule of the PresidiGo bus going from downtown SF to the Presidio:
Be sure you click "Weekend," because weekdays are different.
PresidiGo Downtown Shuttle Schedule | Presidio – San Francisco, CAAlso, there are other ways to get there and return such as the SF Muni bus 43 Masonic, which also stops at our starting point. Below is a link:
43 Masonic | SFMTAAbout 12:30 PM we will eat our lunch. Attendees should bring a sack lunch and lots of water to drink. I love it when attendees upload photos on our website. There are lots of beautiful sights on this walk, so I encourage all to bring a camera.
We will be sure to get back to the Presidio's Transit Center before 4:00 PM because the PresidiGo bus going back to downtown SF will be leaving at 4:00 PM. These buses leave exactly half an hour apart.
See the schedule below:
PresidiGo Downtown Shuttle Schedule | Presidio – San Francisco, CAWe walked this beautiful area before for many years, but in recent years it became spectacular. The Presidio is now wonderful, just like the Golden Gate Park used to be years ago before it became privatized by the Botanical Garden Society.
Now the area around where we start is covered with thousands of beautiful flowers and exotic plants!
