What we’re about
We take walks around neighborhoods far from Times Square. Goals are to get a little exercise, see more of the city, and learn something new. Neighborhoods are all reachable by some form of mass transit. Each walk is ~5 miles at a moderately fast or brisk pace, stopping every few blocks to briefly read aloud from a tour book, e.g., Onofri’s Walking Queens and Walking Brooklyn (they may be a bit outdated, but still useful for structure and history). We may modify the routes. While walking, we chat or just enjoy the scenery.
Features of this group:
- walks are free;
- no group membership fee;
- no solicitation;
- no religious, ethnic, or other affiliations - all are welcome, please be respectful;
- all ages are welcome, longtime New Yorkers and recent arrivals;
- organizers are not tour guides, we’re all just exploring the city; and
- Meetup is our only platform
Bring water and dress for the weather. Please consider weekend MTA silliness and plan to arrive near the starting point at least 15 minutes early. Neighborhood terrain varies, so be prepared for possible hills, stairs, and questionably maintained sidewalks. Feel free to peel off whenever you want. Assume no restroom availability during the walk.
Not required, but kudos to anyone who wants to spend a few minutes researching the neighborhood to share extra tidbits during the walk - new or notable buildings, population statistics, what’s good at the local bakery, really anything.
Liability waiver: Organizers are not responsible for any injuries, losses, or damages that may occur in connection with participation.
Please do not take photos or recordings of participants unless you have obtained their explicit consent in advance.

Do you enjoy Jane’s Walk weekend, but want to participate in something less formal and more frequent?
Do you admire Matt Green and the documentary The World Before Your Feet, but have only a tiny fraction of the ambition?
Have you never heard of the above, but enjoy walking and have no qualms about taking subways and buses to any corner of the five boroughs?
This group could be for you!
