Come to the Grosse Pointe Woods Branch Library (http://gplib.evanced.info/signup/EventDetails?eventid=52021) to observe the Great American Partial Solar Eclipse over Michigan with Mark Kedzior of the Warren Astronomical Society (https://www.meetup.com/warrenastro/). There will be solar-safe telescopes and a batch of solar glasses for safe-viewing of the Sun.
NOTE: The library website says that both of their eclipse viewing events are full - you may need to call to see if any openings are available. There are other events being held at Cranbrook Institute of Science, Chesterfield's Brandenburg Park, and at the Michigan Science Center.
1:00 PM Event starts at the library
1:04 PM First contact — when the Moon makes contact with the Sun; signaling the beginning of the eclipse.
2:26 PM Maximum Eclipse - the Moon will cover about 80% of the Sun.
3:47 PM Fourth contact — when the Moon breaks contact with the Sun; signaling the end of the eclipse.
Warning: NEVER look directly at the Sun without using solar filters. Michigan is north of the eclipse path of totality; people in the metro-Detroit area will see a partial solar eclipse, with the Moon covering about 80% of the Sun. It will still be bright enough to cause damage to your eyes.
