The Warren Astronomical Society meets monthly on the third Thursday in Room 208 in the "E" building at Macomb Community College, 14500 E 12 Mile Road, Warren, MI, 48088.

We do a bit of club business early on, then have a major presentation usually put together by one of our members.

We simulcast meetings online using Zoom. Meetup charges even more money to set up hybrid meetings, so subscribe to our email list on warrenastro.org to get the Zoom links! Meetings are also livestreaming on our YouTube channel.

A Visit to the Tiede Observatory on the Canary Islands
by Dale and Kriste Hollenbaugh

The Tiede Observatory, located on Mt. Tiede on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, is one of the world's greatest observatories. It includes the largest solar observatory in the world. We visited the Canary Islands and got a guided tour of the Tiede Observatory in January 2025. In this presentation, we'll share a bit about our visit to the islands and the observatory, talk about the various facilities and telescopes located there, share some of our photos from our trip and include a bit of the history of the observatory with some factoids. We'll talk a bit about the islands and the reason why they are a great location for astronomical observatories, including comparisons to the Hawaiian islands.

Dale holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bucknell University. He is a Sr. Mechanical Engineer at BAE Systems and has one U.S. Patent. Kriste holds a Bachelor of Science of Pharmacy degree from Ferris State University. She was a registered pharmacist with Rite Aid for 33+ years and retired the day after we returned home from this trip to the Canary Islands. Dale is an avid astrophotographer and Kriste is an avid birder and they both love travel and photography. They have been members of the W.A.S. since 2019 and Dale has had numerous astro photos published in the W.A.S.P. and W.A.S. calendars.
