The Warren Astronomical Society meets monthly on the third Thursday in Room 208 in the "E" building at Macomb Community College, 14500 E 12 Mile Road, Warren, MI, 48088.

We do a bit of club business early on, then have a major presentation usually put together by one of our members.

The Galilean Moons

Dr Partin joined the Warren Astronomical Society in 1998. He soon learned about Galileo’s discovery of the four largest moons of Jupiter in 1610 AD. He immediately did a study of the orbits of those four moons. In 2013, John Dumar joined WAS, and he did a much more rigorous study of their orbits. And finally, Dale measured the speed of light using Jupiter’s moon Io, which was quite difficult. The results of these studies will be presented.
About the Speaker
Dale has a doctorate from Carnegie-Mellon University (1978). He worked as an industrial physicist in the automotive industry for 32 years. He bought his first telescope in 1997 and joined the Warren Astronomical Society in 1998. He has been an officer at least half the time since then. He also teaches astronomy at Macomb Community College.
