What we’re about

Welcome to Hampshire's Wandering Wayfarers, a friendly, leisurely paced walking group where you are welcome to come and join us on walks in Hampshire and the surrounding counties. There may also be the occasional special walk that could be in a different part of the country or spread over 2 or more days.
Walks will mostly be on a Sunday and usually between 6-10 miles (10-16Km). Often there will be places of interest along the way where we will, if the opportunity and time permit, stop and look around. These may be historic buildings, old mills, churches and other interesting and historic landmarks that I hope will serve to enrich the content of the walk.
There will be a modest charge per walk to cover the subscription costs of the site and other expenses associated with running the group, this may now be made by contactless card. There may also be additional charges depending upon the activity.
This is a non-smoking walking group and only open to over 18s.
Please take a moment to look through the Conditions of Membership below:

Conditions of Membership
In order for each person to enjoy the experience of being with this group, members are asked to read and comply with the following:

  • Conflict of Interest
If I consider your membership of this group to be a 'Conflict of Interest' to the group, it's activities or membership, then your membership of this group is likely to be terminated.
  • Using the Meetup Group Site
    Registering with this group
  • IMPORTANT: Profile Picture and Name
Like most Meetups - please register with an appropriate and recognisable photo with your real name. Your profile will be removed if it is non-compliant.
  • Walk Events
Events are periodically put on the Group's Meetup platform.
When an Event's RSVP is open, members may RSVP to the event. The host may 'Post' an event, however, events may not be 'Announced' to all members immediately allowing regular visitors the chance to see the events first. This may be done if there is a limited number that can go.
  • Joining Walks and Double Booking
I'd ask that you please only 'Join' a walk in this group if you intend to come along. Please don't 'Double book' events on other Meetup groups.
  • "UNPAID" by your name
This is set up by "Meetup".
When you RSVP to go on a walk you are flagged as 'Unpaid' - in fact EVERYONE is flagged as 'Unpaid' (only your details are visible to you)
When you have paid, (usually by cash/card on the day of the walk), I update the list to flag you as 'Paid'. Mostly this is done on the day but maybe at a later time.
If payment is required in advance, and you have paid, this will then be updated.
  • Removing yourself from the Walk
If you decide not to go on a walk that you have said you are going on please change your status to 'Not Going' as soon as possible.
Failure to do so may result in you being flagged as a 'No Show'.
If you 'drop out' at the last moment your name will be flagged with a '*'. Your attendance at future events may be restricted and you could be removed from the group following three '*' drop outs.
  • 'No Show'
If you opt to 'Join' a walk and withdraw on the morning of the walk, or just fail to turn up, this is considered to be a 'No Show' and your name will be flagged with a hash #. Your attendance at future events may be restricted following a 'no show'. If there are extenuating circumstances for your 'No Show' please get in touch so the flag can be removed. You may be removed from the group for persistent 'no shows' as this is discourteous to both the event organiser and other members who will be expecting you.
  • Walk Postponement/Cancellation
It is the intent to offer walks as published on the Meetup calendar, however there may be times when, due to circumstances that may be unforeseen or beyond our control, the walk is postponed or cancelled. If a walk that is cancelled can be rescheduled at a later date then this will be done if circumstances permit.
The walk may also be cancelled if, in the opinion of the Walk Leader or organiser, the weather conditions would make the walk too hazardous for safety or unpleasant.
The walk may also be cancelled if the number of attendees fall below a minimum required for that particular event.
Any fees paid for any event that is subsequently cancelled will be repaid in full.
As much notice of cancellation or postponement will be given, however, neither the Walk Leader, organiser nor the Meetup organisation accept any liability for any subsequent or consequential losses incurred due to the cancellation or postponement of an event.
  • Special Event days
There may be 'special event' days where walks will be conducted over a longer distance, perhaps requiring group transport to be arranged, over a weekend or perhaps longer periods. Places on these 'special' events may be limited and are likely to be restricted to regular walkers that would have attended a minimum number of previous walks. Details will be made known at the time of publishing the event.
For 'special events' involving additional charges, these charges may be requested as a condition of booking and are not refundable (unless the event is cancelled) should you subsequently withdraw.
  • On the day of the walk
  • No Show
Walks generally have an RSVP 'Cut Off' time (often 9am on the day of the walk). If you change your RSVP to 'Not Going' after this time you will be flagged as a 'No Show' and your name will be identified with a hash #.
Your attendance at future events may be restricted following a 'No Show'.
If there are extenuating circumstances for your 'No Show' please get in touch so the flag can be removed.
  • Smoking
This is a NON SMOKING group. For the enjoyment and comfort of others, members are asked not to smoke at any time (this includes e-cigarettes) either prior to, during, or after the event whilst with the group.
  • Personal Equipment
Please ensure you bring suitable personal equipment and enough provisions for your own needs.
Appropriate clothing should be worn at all times.
During the walk there will usually be a 'coffee' break, a lunch break, and, depending on the length of the walk, an afternoon break.
  • The Meeting Start Point
Please double check directions to the Meetup start point. The point indicated in the map is usually accurate. You should check the location on Google Maps if you have any doubt.
DO NOT RELY ON THE POSTCODE. Often the start point is in the middle of nowhere and the postcode will be irrelevant. Please do check the location on the site and use the Meetup Directions link to Google Maps on your phone.
It is your responsibility to arrive at the start point in time for the advertised departure. Whilst it is always hoped there will be enough parking at the advertised point it may be that you will have to find an alternative place to park so please allow time for this. It is unlikely that the Walk Leader will hold the rest of the group up for late comers.
  • Registration and Payment of Walk Fees
Please 'sign in' with the Walk Leader who will have a register of people on the walk and will mark you present. Please also pay any walking fees due at this time. Payment may be made by cash or card. You will then be updated to be 'present' and 'paid'. This may be updated on the site after the walk.
  • On the Walk
At all times please follow the instructions of the Walk Leader. In general these will be limited to matters of safety and group management.
It is an all adult group and therefore each walker has the responsibility to look after themselves and to keep within the group. There may not be a 'back marker' so please keep the group, and especially the Walk Leader, in visual contact at all times.
The pace will be set by the Walk Leader who may not be leading from the front so please do not get too far ahead or allow yourself to get left behind.
There may be times when you will need to stop. Please let the Walk Leader know (either directly or indirectly) that you need to stop so that you don't get left behind.
Should you wish to leave the walk/event for any reason then please let the Walk Leader know. The Walk Leader will relinquish any responsibility to you once you have left the group.
Walks may or may not have been recced beforehand and changes to the route may be made 'on the fly' in case of unexpected diversions, path closures, livestock, poor weather, or as otherwise decided by the walk leader.
  • Dogs
Well behaved dogs, under close control, are welcome unless otherwise advised on the event.
For the safety and comfort of other walkers, livestock, animal and bird welfare, if the Walk Leader is uncomfortable with a loose or aggressive dog, the owner will be asked to walk the dog on a lead.
  • Litter
Please take your litter home or dispose of it in a proper bin en-route. Please do not throw citrus peel nor banana skins into bushes or leave them lying around the countryside. They have waxy skins which take an age (2 years in fact!) to naturally break down and look very untidy strewn all over the place. Apple cores are not so bad - they take only 8 weeks, or less if a bird or animal finds it!
  • Unacceptable behaviour
It goes without saying that the purpose of these walks is to enjoy what our countryside has to offer and everyone has a right to enjoy these activities in a safe and pleasant atmosphere. Therefore, please refrain from any activity likely to cause distress to another member or the group as a whole.
  • Risk
Walking is an activity with relatively low risk but please be reminded that you attend the event at your own risk to you and your property. The Walk Leader will aim to reduce the risk to you on the walk but will not be liable for any injury due to your lack of care, attention or negligence, loss or damage to any vehicle or equipment you may have. You should have sufficient insurance to cover this.
  • Photographs
By joining a walk you agree that you may appear in photographs taken and posted on the Meetup site. Members may post their own photos of the event on the site but any photo may be asked to be removed if deemed unsuitable.
  • Finally...
There are a number of times when we will be visiting old churches, mills, old buildings etc. I find these old buildings fascinating and those that are open are nearly always free to enter. If, like me, you find an interest in these old building and wish to offer a contribution to their upkeep then I am sure a church for example, will be very grateful for any donations received. I usually drop some loose change in their box and this often covers an information leaflet which is always an interesting read.
Thank you for your understanding of the above.
    Now... let's go walking...........
