Making Art at Eunpyeong Hanok Village

은평한옥마을은 제가 Ways of Being 회원들과 꼭 한 번 가보고 싶었던 너무나 멋진 곳이예요. 서울의 대표적인 길지로 산에 둘러싸인 아늑한 마을이 왜 그렇게 기운이 좋은지 몸으로 느낄 수 있어요. 근사한 풍광뿐만 아니라 진관사계곡에서 흘러내리는 시원한 물줄기가 오랜 나무들과 멋지게 어울려요. 인간이 만든 마을과 자연이 만든 계곡이 환상적으로 어우러져 있죠.

서울의 북쪽 끝자락에 있기 때문에 출발하는 곳에 따라서 다소 멀게 느껴질 수도 있어요. 단 몇 시간만 보내고 오기엔 좀 아쉬운 면도 있고요. 그래서 11시쯤 만나 자유롭게 스케치를 하다가 1시에 함께 식사를 하고 다시 자유롭게 둘러보다가 4시에 모여서 하루 동안 자신이 경험한 흔적들을 함께 나눴으면 해요. 당일치기 예술여행이라고 생각하면 좋을 거 같아요.

가을이 오길 기다리며 아껴두었던 장소입니다. 서울에서 만날 수 있는 아주 특별한 장소. 인공과 자연을 모두 느낄 수 있는 곳. 언젠가 내가 살고 싶은 그런 마을. 우리가 예전에 살던 모습, 하지만 지금도 새롭게 해석한 한옥을 지어 실제 사람들이 살고 있는 곳. 과거와 현재를 모두 만날 수 있는 곳. 그곳에서 만나요!

Eunpyeong Hanok Village is a truly wonderful place I’ve been wanting to visit with the Ways of Being members for a long time. It is one of Seoul’s most renowned auspicious sites—a cozy village surrounded by mountains—and you can actually feel why it has such a wonderful energy. In addition to its beautiful scenery, the cool stream flowing down from Jingwansa Valley blends beautifully with the old trees. The village created by people and the valley shaped by nature come together in a fantastically harmonious way.

Because it is located at the northern edge of Seoul, it may feel somewhat far depending on where you are coming from. It would also be a little disappointing to go all that way and spend only a few hours there. So, I thought it would be nice for us to meet around 11 a.m., spend some time sketching freely, have lunch together at 1 p.m., then explore the area at our own pace before gathering again at 4 p.m. to share the traces of what we experienced throughout the day. I think it would be wonderful to think of it as a one-day art trip.

This is a place I’ve been saving for autumn. A truly special place to visit in Seoul. A place where you can experience both the man-made and the natural. A village like the one I might want to live in someday. It reminds us of how people used to live, yet it is also a place where newly interpreted hanok houses have been built and are inhabited by real people today. It is a place where we can encounter both the past and the present.
