About us
This group will meet to discuss one of the weird movies on the 366 Weird Movies List and Apocrypha (https://366weirdmovies.com/the-weird-movie-list/). We can go beyond that list too -- nothing is set in stone.
Half of the time, you will watch the movie on your own and then come to the meeting to discuss it. In the other meetings, we will watch the movie together and then discuss it.
See this spreadsheet for information about the 366 Weird Movies List and Apocrypha, including where you can find the movies streaming (though lots of that information is out of date.) 366 Weird Movies + Apocrypha: streaming info last updated 5/24/21 - Google Sheets

"I Love Boosters'" Screening and Discussion: Buy Your Own Ticket
Alamo Drafthouse, 9060 Hudson Rd, Woodbury, MN, USLet's try seeing a first-run movie in its opening weekend. "I Love Boosters" is Boots Riley's follow-up to the weird movie all-timer "Sorry to Bother You." Advanced praise notes that it's quite weird in a great way.
I think Alamo Drafthouse in Woodbury will work best for us: Twin Cities | Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Get there early because Alamo always has a pre-show of fun related material -- I'm betting it will be The Coup videos for this one. (The Coup is director Boots Riley's rap group.) I won't be greeting people in the lobby because I don't want to miss any pre-show stuff. I will be in the bar afterwards with my black Weird Movie Club baseball cap on.
The Main Cinema is more centrally located, but after going there recently I'm not confident there will be a good spot for post-movie discussion. I'm open to suggested changes in venue. No matter what, you will have to go online and buy your own ticket.
And feel free to sitemail me to recommend another movie for a future meeting. It would be great if you wanted to host and lead discussion too. You can go by the official list from the website 366 Weird Movies (366 Weird Movies + Apocrypha: streaming info last updated 5/24/21 - Google Sheets) or suggest something else.

"The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" Screening and Discussion: Buy Your Own Ticket
Heights Theater, 3951 Central Ave NE, Columbia Heights, MN, USLet's go the Heights Theater, a big, fun Columbia Heights theater with its own organ, to see "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." You will need to buy your own ticket online. Do it soon, as the show could sell out. Tickets are $20, but that includes the live organ playing throughout the movie: The Heights Theater
After the showing, we will walk over to Rail Werks Brewing Depot for the discussion. It shouldn't be too crowded or noisy there at 1 pm on a Sunday.

"The Color of Pomegranates" Screening and Discussion
Saint Paul Public Library - George Latimer Central Library, 90 West 4th Street, Saint Paul, MN, US"The Color of Pomegranates" (1969) is nominally a biography of an Armenian poet. It's such a poetic and surreal vision that you might leave without knowing much about the subject. Director Sergei Parajanov was one a handful of filmmakers in history credited with creating his own "film grammar," i.e. the basic structure of signifiers with which films tell stories. "The Color of Pomegranates" might be a bit of a challenge, but I think it's well worth it for the wild, creative imagery alone. (And if you disagree, it's only 78 minutes long.) Lady Gaga would agree; she based her video for "911" on the images of the film: Lady Gaga - 911 (Short Film) - YouTube
I'll get to the library around 1:30 p.m. and try to set everything up in time for a 2 p.m. start. Get there early so you don't miss a minute. The library closes at 5, so we'll have to wrap up discussion before then. Discussions tend to last no more than about half an hour.
It's all free. We'll be in the Andy Boss Community Room on the 4th floor of the George Latimer Public Library in downtown St. Paul.
Street parking is possible, but you might consider using the light rail. A great place to park and ride is the Western Avenue stop of the Green Line. There's always parking on Aurora Avenue, one street south of University.
And feel free to sitemail me to recommend another movie for a future meeting. It would be great if you wanted to host and lead discussion too.
