What we’re about
This group will meet to discuss one of the weird movies on the 366 Weird Movies List and Apocrypha (https://366weirdmovies.com/the-weird-movie-list/). We can go beyond that list too -- nothing is set in stone.
Half of the time, you will watch the movie on your own and then come to the meeting to discuss it. In the other meetings, we will watch the movie together and then discuss it.
See this spreadsheet for information about the 366 Weird Movies List and Apocrypha, including where you can find the movies streaming (though lots of that information is out of date.) 366 Weird Movies + Apocrypha: streaming info last updated 5/24/21 - Google Sheets

See all- "Kung Fu Hustle" Screening and DiscussionSaint Paul Public Library - George Latimer Central Library, Saint Paul, MN
Let's head back to the library for the big, silly crowd-pleaser "Kung Fu Hustle," the movie that Roger Ebert said was like "like Jackie Chan and Buster Keaton meet Quentin Tarantino and Bugs Bunny."
I'll get to the library at 1:30 p.m. and try to set everything up in time for a 2 p.m. start. Get there early so you don't miss a minute. The library closes at 5, so we'll have to wrap up discussion before then. Discussions tend to last no more than about half an hour, but maybe it will last longer this time if we break into smaller groups and make it feel less like a classroom.
It's all free. We'll be in the Andy Boss Community Room on the 4th floor of the George Latimer Public Library in downtown St. Paul.
Street parking is possible, but you might consider using the light rail. A great place to park and ride is the Western Avenue stop of the Green Line. There's always parking on Aurora Avenue, one street south of University.
And feel free to sitemail me to recommend another movie for a future meeting. It would be great if you wanted to host and lead discussion too. You can go by the official list from the website 366 Weird Movies (366 Weird Movies + Apocrypha: streaming info last updated 5/24/21 - Google Sheets) or suggest something else.
- "Suspiria" Discussion: Watch it at Home FirstPryes Brewing Company, Minneapolis, MN
It's spooky season, so let's go with a horror movie. See what you think of the original "Suspiria," directed by Dario Argento in 1977. Watch it on your own and come ready to chat about it. It's on Kanopy, Plex, and several other free streaming sites I haven't heard of: Suspiria streaming: where to watch movie online?. If you want to also watch the 2018 remake by Luca Guadagnino you can, but that's above and beyond.
We'll meet at Pryes Brewing, which has lots of space and isn't very noisy. It's near downtown Minneapolis but has plenty of parking. I'll get there around 6:30 p.m. and claim a table on the opposite side of the bar. Get a drink and then head to the other end of the building, to one of the long tables near the risers. It's quietest there and there will probably be a long table free. Either way, you'll be able to identify me by my baseball cap that says "Weird Movie Club" on it.

- "Carnival of Souls" Screening and DiscussionSaint Paul Public Library - George Latimer Central Library, Saint Paul, MN
A horror classic that you can feel comfortable watching at a library in the afternoon, "Carnival of Souls" is the rare independent low-budget movie from the early 1960s that has retained a non-ironic following. I wouldn't say it's shocking or scary as much as it creates a fascinatingly creepy atmosphere.

- "Solaris" Discussion: Watch it at Home FirstPryes Brewing Company, Minneapolis, MN
Let's get back to something serious and arty. Andrei Tarkovsky's 1972 film "Solaris" set the standard for serious, arty sci-fi.
People tend to either love or hate Tarkovsky: Directors, critics, and diehard cinephiles rate his films among the greatest in history ("Sight and Sound" lists are full of them) while more casual movie lovers find them painfully dull. Even if you anticipate falling into the latter group, I'd say it's worth giving "Solaris" a try. At the very least, you'll come out of the experience with some strong opinions to discuss.
Watch "Solaris" on your own and come ready to chat about it. It's on Kanopy, Criterion Channel, and HBO Max and it's rentable: Solaris streaming: where to watch movie online?. If you want to also watch the 2002 remake by Steven Soderbergh you can, but that's above and beyond.
