### Abstract
Blockchain has been in the public conversation for over a decade, and most of that conversation has been about money. Very little of it has been about how the thing actually works.
This session takes the opposite approach. Starting from the 2008 Bitcoin whitepaper, we rebuild the technology from first principles — cryptography, data structures, networking, and consensus — and then look at how Ethereum extended a shared ledger into a shared state machine capable of running code.
The session opens with a live experiment rather than a slide. Everyone joins a small chain from their phone, submits a transaction, and watches a block form. The rest of the talk explains what just happened.
No prior blockchain knowledge is assumed. A host will ask beginner-level questions throughout the session to keep the discussion accessible, so you are never more than a few minutes away from someone asking the question you were too polite to ask.
What we will cover:
- The problem: why digital value can always be copied, and why solving it without a central administrator was the hard part
- Proof: how hashing and digital signatures make tampering visible — and why hashing is not encryption
- Records: blocks, hash pointers, Merkle trees, and Bitcoin's unspent-output model
- Agreement: how transactions propagate with no master node, what proof of work actually buys, and why competing chains resolve themselves
- Programmability: how Ethereum turns a ledger into a state machine, and what a smart contract really is
- Judgement: a three-condition test for when a blockchain is genuinely the right tool — and four common cases where it is definitively the wrong one
Whether you are an engineer who has never touched the space, someone who has heard about blockchain for years without ever getting a straight technical answer, or simply curious about how a system with no administrator manages to agree on anything, this session is for you.
### Speaker Bio
Scott is a software engineer at Koala Technology Ltd, where he works across the company's web and platform products. He has spent several years working with blockchain protocols and contributing to open-source communities in the space, and has been involved in building systems around them — including compliance and reporting tools for the New Zealand market.
His current interest is in how autonomous AI agents can transact directly on-chain without being handed credentials or card details, an area where much of the ongoing work is open source and community-driven.
Scott is presenting in a personal capacity and has chosen to focus this session purely on the underlying technology.
