About us
This book club is for readers who want to explore and discuss enduring works of literature from across all genres, coming together once a month over coffee for thoughtful conversation. We will begin with more modern works and gradually move toward older works, perhaps even reaching Homer. We plan to meet monthly and select manageably sized books that fit into everyone’s busy schedules.

To the Lighthouse, and Prelude
coffee & toast, 328 Tinakori Road, Thorndon, Wellington 6011, wellington, NZVirginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield were deeply influenced by one another and explored several overlapping themes in their work. Their relationship was also a complex one, tinged with admiration and affection, but also with rivalry and creative competition.
Since we're focusing on shorter works, we thought it would be interesting to read both authors and have a comparative discussion of their writing. The two texts chosen are To the Lighthouse by Woolf and Prelude, a short story by Mansfield. Together, they offer an interesting opportunity to explore the similarities and differences in each writer's treatment of memory, domestic life, and inner consciousness.
Some optional materials to consider for this event include At the Bay by Mansfield, as well as this audio collection available through the National Library:
