To the Lighthouse, and Prelude

Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield were deeply influenced by one another and explored several overlapping themes in their work. Their relationship was also a complex one, tinged with admiration and affection, but also with rivalry and creative competition.

Since we're focusing on shorter works, we thought it would be interesting to read both authors and have a comparative discussion of their writing. The two texts chosen are To the Lighthouse by Woolf and Prelude, a short story by Mansfield. Together, they offer an interesting opportunity to explore the similarities and differences in each writer's treatment of memory, domestic life, and inner consciousness.
