Tales of Vengeance Double Feature: The Crow + Akira

Needs a location

Movie night for up to seven sci-fi fans plus Sarah and I, your event hosts. We'll meet up at 6:00 p.m. for a 6:15 start. BYO snacks and liquid refreshments.

July's selections are dark, gritty, and a little disturbing. A strong example of this is the first movie on the docket, The Crow. It stars Brandon Lee in his final film appearance as Eric Draven, a murdered musician who is resurrected to avenge his death and that of his fiancée. Production on The Crow was struck by tragedy when Lee was fatally wounded during filming. Since Lee had finished most of his scenes before his death, the film was completed through script rewrites, a stunt double, and digital effects. If that isn't enough to pique your interest in the film, then go ahead and watch The Crow's trailer:

Described as a gothic masterpiece by some, and a haunting, mesmerizing triumph by others, come along and see if The Crow lives up to the hype...

As for Akira, this was the film that introduced anime to the West and caused it to go mainstream. Set in a dystopian 2019, it tells the story of Shōtarō Kaneda, the leader of a biker gang whose childhood friend, Tetsuo Shima, acquires incredible telekinetic abilities after a motorcycle accident, eventually threatening an entire military complex amid chaos and rebellion in the sprawling futuristic metropolis of Neo-Tokyo.

Akira is widely regarded by critics as one of the greatest movies ever made in the animation, action and science fiction genres, as well as a landmark in Japanese animation. It's also a pivotal film in the cyberpunk genre, particularly the Japanese cyberpunk subgenre. Some people even say that the ending of Akira is on the same level as 2001: A Space Odyssey -- but more disgusting, and gruesome. You have been warned!

Following The Crow and a brief intermission, we'll put on Akira at 8:10. If you're only coming for Akira, feel free to show up at 8:00 p.m. during the intermission. Let us know in the comments below if that's what you plan to do. Hope to see you there! :)

Scifi/Fantasy Quiz with Cameron and Sarah

Needs a location

We usually have about 2-3 teams of 4-6 people each. We might ask people to move around teams to make sure there's a good mix of regulars and newbies.

There are usually 4-5 rounds (including a picture round), and we ask quiz masters to cover a wide range of franchises/movies/tv series/books, etc. We'll be keeping score, but the emphasis is on fun! Don't worry if you don't feel like you'll be able to answer many questions, there should be some easier ones, and your team mates will help you out anyway.

We will be operating under covid Orange settings. As always, we will be following the requirements at our usual venue the Tasting Room e.g. masking as desired. Vaccine passes will not be required for entry. If you feel unwell, it would be best to skip this quiz and come for the next one after you are better - it's not going anywhere!

Apart from the above, we leave the management of your own health and risk to yourself to decide, either by attending or not attending or taking any additional personal measures you may think required for yourself at the quiz.

By the way The Tasting Room kindly gives the scifi quiz a discount on any glass of wine from their Kopiko Bay range. They also do good food (however, sadly, not at a discount...).

We look forward to seeing you there. It should be a good one!

Live long and prosper!

P.S. Quiz master please bring pen and paper for the quiz teams.
