Pip is a new musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel, Great Expectations. It was written over a period of about 10 years by John Golder, a former and much-loved member of Wellington Repertory Theatre, before he died about 10 years ago. This classic show serves as a memorial to him and will be a great night out for Wellington theatre audiences!
John wrote the book and lyrics for songs, but not music. A team of talented Wellingtonians (Tanya Piejus, Katie Morton and Talia Carlisle) have adapted the script to a musical format with the music composed by Katie Morton and orchestrated by Phoebe Caldeiro and Victoria Norgrove.
This musical adaptation of Great Expectations is the story of Pip, an orphan boy adopted by his sister and her blacksmith husband. The story traces Pip’s good luck and great expectations as a result of an anonymous benefactor – and his eventual fall through his own rashness.
Throughout, however, Pip learns how to find happiness, the meaning of friendship and the meaning of love.
