The Coalition for Police Accountability will describe the progress Oakland has made with its police commission and investigative agency, the most independent in the country, and the ballot measure currently being proposed to strengthen it further. Jose Bernal of the Ella Baker Center will speak to issues around the power of the sheriff and coalition working to limit it.
Also included in our meeting, will be our very own Berkeley City Councilmember Kate Harrison. She was the lead author and negotiator on behalf of the Charter Amendment to strengthen community oversight of police, which is scheduled to be voted on by the City Council on April 14, to place it on the 2020 ballot. She also will talk about the Mayor's Working Group on Fair and Impartial Policing.
Here is the response from the Coalition for Police Accountability, which had called for the firing of former Oakland Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick more than a year ago, that a hearing required before serious discipline actions can be taken against officers, largely agreed with the actions of the city’s independent Police Commission’s Discipline Committee.
