Kumeyaay Lake Overnighter (San Diego)
Epic Cycles (Solana Beach Amtrak Station), 115 N. Highway 101, Solana Beach, CA, USThis is a 30-mile bike ride each way, to Kumeyaay Lake Campground in San Diego County, on Saturday March 14. We'll start from the Solana Beach Amtrak Station, and ride to the campground to stay for one night. We will return the next day by a different route, ending at our original starting point. We will use streets which are mostly (but not completely) with bike lanes. There are also several sections on bike trails. There will be several climbs which average bike riders will have no problems with. New bike campers may find it to be a workout with a camping load on your bike but do-able; don't worry, we'll all go slow and keep together as a group as needed.
ROUTE
DAY 1 (see route)
From Solana Beach, we'll ride south by the coast toward Del Mar. After Del Mar, we will swing inland. taking roads and bike trails. We'll stop for lunch at Cutwater Tasting Room (it may be a bit early for drinks but they have good lunches). At mile 23, we will stop at Vons Market if anyone needs to buy their food for the rest of the trip. Then a few more miles will take us to the campground. There are flush toilets and showers at the campground, at no extra cost.
DAY 2 (see route)
Leaving from the campground, we will ride toward Old Town San Diego (but not visit). At mile 6, we will stop for whoever wants coffee and a small second breakfast from several vendors (we'll stop at Einstein Bagels, but there's also Carl's and Wendy's next door). After passing by Old Town, we will pass through Mission Bay. If people are hungry we'll stop at an In-N-Out right after Mission Bay. Otherwise, we'll keep heading to UCSD, Torrey Pines, and then back to our starting point.CAMPING SITES
You will have to arrange your own site, either by booking one yourself or joining with another who has a site. You can book here. The reason: San Diego Parks only allows 2 tents per site. That means, for instance, if 2 couples were on one site with each couple using a tent, there can be 4 people on that site.. With single people in one tent each, there can only be 2 people on that site. Weird, I know, but those are the rules. Since I don't know how many are coming, I only booked 2 sites and will have others book the rest.
Please reserve a site for yourself or join a site with a spot open. Communicate with each other in the comments section below to indicate whether you have booked a site, or to join an open site. Each site is $27 total. Split the cost with your sitemate(s). I currently have sites 14 and 16 booked; the first 3 people to sign up can claim a spot on these sites; just let me know in the comments. Any person after the initial 3 will have to book or arrange another site. Nearby open sites (as of 1/18/2026) are sites 18, 21, and 23. If you can, try to book as early as you can to nab those site numbers.MEETING UP
We will meet in front of Epic Cycles at 115 N Hwy 101 in Solana Beach, across from the Solana Beach Amtrak Station. We will meet at 10:30 AM. You can park overnight at the Solana Beach Amtrak Parking (it's technically for Amtrak passengers, but I think there'll be some arriving by train so car drivers can use their spot. :) )
Those wishing to take the train from the LA/Orange area can take Amtrak to Solana Beach. The bike is free, but you need to reserve a spot for your bike when you purchase a ticket. If coming from the south or from Oceanside, you can take the Coaster.EXTRA CURRICULAR
Anyone wanting to spend extra time camping can camp Friday night at the San Elijo State Beach hike-and-bike area in Cardiff. Then bike 2 miles to meet the group on Saturday.************************

Lake Perris Overnighter
Downtown Riverside Metrolink Station, 4066 Vine St, Riverside, CA, USThis is a bike-camp overnighter on Saturday April 11, going to the Lake Perris State Recreation Area, starting from the Downtown Riverside Metrolink Station. We will ride 26 miles to camp overnight at Lake Perris and return the next day to the station by a different 28-mile route.
ROUTE DESCRIPTION
DAY 1 (View Route)
From the Downtown Riverside Metrolink Station, we'll ride several miles to UC Riverside where we'll have lunch at The Substation, where we can eat on the patio next to our bikes. Afterwards we'll cut through the campus and then turn south to do a 2-mile climb up to Moreno Valley, where we'll use the Juan Batista de Anza Bike Trail to get to Lake Perris State Recreation Area. The climb is gradual and easily done by seasoned riders. New bike-campers might find it to be a workout, but quite do-able. Going there, we are on bike trails about half the time. The rest of the time will be on streets-- the streets will be 50/50 bike lanes/no bike lanes. We'll stop at Aldi's Market just before Lake Perris, where we can pick up food for dinner at the campground, if needed. When we get to Lake Perris, we'll take a scenic ride around the entire lake before ending at our campground. There are flush toilets and showers at the campground.
DAY 2 (View Route)
We will start our 28-mile return ride by first riding half way around the lake and exiting at a different gate. Then we'll catch the same Juan Batista Trail that we came on. We'll stop by a Farmer Boys, where people can grab some coffee and have a second breakfast/brunch. After this, we'll ride west on a somewhat lengthy and busy road-- but bike lanes separate us from the traffic, and we'll get a nice descent-- before ultimately reaching the Riverside Metrolink Station.MEETING UP
We will meet at the Riverside Downtown Metrolink Station at 11:00 a.m. Sadly, taking the train is not an option since there is no workable arrival schedule for the train. There is overnight parking at this station. If you do use overnight parking, please be sure you are in the lot that allows overnight parking (as there is one lot that does not allow it.)CAMPING SITES
I have booked 2 sites. The camp rules only allows 4 small 2-person tents per site, so I have set the rider limit at 8. But if a couple shares one tent, I can increase that number. If a waiting list gets large, I may have someone book another site and I will increase the rider count limit (I am only allowed to book 2 sites under one name).
Cost for this meetup is $10 per tent, collected on day of ride. This covers the cost of the campsites, and any left over will cover the cost of this meetup site.*******************
