Overnight Bike-Camping: Saddleback Butte State Park

Details

This is a 25-mile bicycle ride through flat desert terrain, starting from the Palmdale Metrolink Station. We will be camping overnight at Saddleback Butte State Park. This is a good ride for those new to bike touring/camping and want to spend a weekend to try it out. The ride is on marked paved roads, with a small part of it on gravel. Standard bikes are fine.

We will leave Saturday from the Palmdale Metrolink station at 1:45 pm. Route is given here.

Camping at Saddleback Butte State Park is first-come-first served; there are always campgrounds available. Cost is $20 per site, paid when we arrive. There is a limitation of 8 people per site with no given limitation to the number of tents per site, although no more than 4 tents per site is recommended due to site size. Each person can work out the split of the cost with the people with whom they share the site.

Potable water and flush toilets are available at the campsite. No showers, however.

We will leave from the campground on Sunday some time after breakfast, in order to catch the 2:20 PM Metrolink train (Train #AV276) back to Los Angeles.

Riders should pack their food for the whole ride and camping. We can stop at Village Center Market at mile 11 for groceries, if anyone needs to.

Meet at the Palmdale Metrolink Station at 1:40 pm. People can take the Metrolink from LA Union Station or any stop in between Union Station and Palmdale. You can also park at the Palmdale Station for up to 48 hours.
