What we’re about

This Meetup group is open to anyone living on unceded coastal territories, such as those belonging to the Squamish, T'sleil-Waututh, and Musqueam First Nations (colonially known as Vancouver, BC), who support and advocate for an international criminal law of Ecocide. The Meetup events are organized by West Coast Youth For Ecocide Law, but people of all ages are welcome to attend.

These Meetups involve fun introductions, deep discussions, learning, and socializing, often accompanied by local food and drink. They are facilitated in such a way as to encourage healthy, respectful discourse and end with actionable items we can take with us into our outside lives. Anyone with a love for the environment, a concern for climate justice and social justice, an interest in law, human rights, or an interest in climate change policy and environmental policy may find solidarity and community in this group.

The goals of the group are:

  1. Networking: Making friends and connections with others who have an interest in ecocide law, human rights, environmental activism etc. while enjoying some local food and drink and sharing stories
  2. Education: Learning about the "who, what, when, where, why and how" of this potential new law, and what it could mean for you, your community, Nation, business or organization, so that going forward, you can confidently talk with others (including possibly your MP) about Ecocide Law, and feel good about your level of understanding
  3. Building a Team: West Coast Youth for Ecocide Law is looking for regular volunteers and organizers to help with our grassroots campaign and political lobbying. We need writers, activists, organizers, artists, lawyers, students, translators etc. to be a part of our team. Any level of capacity is welcome, but the goal is to meet regularly, have an ongoing chat thread, and call upon each other for help when pursuing actions such as writing posts, letters, petitions, organizing outreach events, visiting MPs, fundraising etc.

Have you stumbled upon this group and are now thinking, "what in the heck is ecocide law? I've never even heard of this before!" No worries, we got you. The proposed definition for 'ecocide' was only released in June 2021, so this campaign is fairly new, but is picking up speed very quickly! Take a look at the short introductory video below from Stop Ecocide co-founder Jojo Mehta.

Anyone concerned about the climate and ecological emergency and biodiversity crisis should take a look into ecocide law and how this (currently missing) piece of legislation, could play a huge role in setting things right. Want to talk about it? Join our group and let's Meetup!
