Hike #1 - Blencathra via Halls Fell Ridge - Blencathra, Bannerdale Crags, Mungrisdale Common
We will start this walk from our accommodation. Anyone not staying at the accommodation there is a car park just up the road from our accommodation. Park here and then walk down to the Blencathra field studies site, our place is opposite reception.
We start off with a nice flat walk to warm up, along Blease Road and then through fields along the bottom of Blencathra. It is then a 710m ascent across 1mi (1.6km) to the top of Blencathra, going along a rocky ridge. This ridge is suitable for beginners to ridges and scrambling, it should not pose to much trouble. It is not dangerous like Sharp Edge to the top of Blencathra, Striding Edge to the top of Helvellyn or Crib Goch to the top of Snowden.
Once up to the top of Blencathra (868m), take in the views, probs have lunch up here if it takes us a while to get up and weather permits. We then descend for 0.6mi (0.9km) down to Scales Tarn, have lunch here if it was to windy up top. We then descend for another mile (1.6km) and then cross the River Glenderamackin.
It is then a 250m ascent over 0.9mi (1.5km) to the top of Bannerdale Crags (683m). We are now 5.6mi (8.8km) into the hike and over half way, well done!
It is then a flat, slight descent, 2mi (3.2km) walk over the moors to Mungrisdale Common (633m). The last 3 miles (4.8km) we descend down to Sinen Gill and then Roughten Gill, before following the path back to our accomodation.
Anyone who parked at Threlkeld continue on the path for a short while and it comes out onto Blease Road. Follow the road back to Threlkeld.
