Lower Bangs Canyon by Gunnison River
Details
This mostly off-trail 7 to 8 mile loop hike starts down on Hwy 141 where the Tabegauche trail crosses the highway. The hike's lowest point is only 800 ft below the highest point of the hike but Google Earth claims with the ups and downs it will feel more like we've climbed about 2000 ft. Some of the ups and downs are steep - so hiking poles may be a good thing to have along. Please bring spare shoes to change into after the hike in case our boots get muddy.
We'll get some nice views of the Gunnison River as well as views of Bangs Canyon (which we'll cross twice).
By the way, Bangs Canyon Trailhead on Little Park road is miles and miles from where we'll be.
Friendly, well-behaved dogs used to cross-country travel where there are patches of cactus are welcome. You may want a leash for the highway crossings.
End time is only listed to satisfy Meetup - we may be done earlier or later.
The meeting spot is along Hwy 50 just south of 32 Road. Turn at Hookless Blvd and then a quick right leads you to the parking lot by the CDOT warehouses. "orchard mesa park and ride" aka N 39 0.701 W 108 28.233
When car-pooling it is always NICE to offer the driver some money to cover gas, a car wash, etc.
