2026 Moab Spring Getaway
Sand Flats Recreation Area, Sand Flats Road, Moab, UT, USHey everyone, how about celebrating a little bit after tax day? For those interested, I’ll be rejoicing at the Sand Flats recreation area in Moab. And while I’m there, what the heck, may as well do a little ADV riding. The White Rim, Lockhart Basin, the Hey Joe Mine, Slick Rock, Onion Creek loop…etc. I’m not suggesting that anyone ride any of these routes, these are merely rides that I like. Every rider can decide for themself what they are capable of doing. Moab weather in April is usually low precipitation with highs in the mid 60s and lows in the mid 40s.

The fine print:
Sand Flats is a quasi-primitive camping area. Picnic tables and vault toilets only. No power or water. And no reservations, it’s first come first serve.
There are multiple eateries & grocery stores & convenience stores 5 minutes away in Moab. Camping is $15 per night.
There are also hotels in town, but you’re on your own there. I’ve never stayed in any of them so I don’t have any suggestions.I can’t guarantee that the White Rim will actually happen this trip. I did it in early October and what are normally stiff intermediate sections were advanced terrain. Due to the dry weather, the sand at Mineral Bottom was soft and deep. Both sides of Hardscrabble Hill were difficult due to the dry terrain being torn apart by 4 wheeled vehicles leaving lots of talc and big rocks. Basically, the entire loop was more difficult than it normally is. Anyone who wants to do the White Rim will have to ask around in town and see what people say…
There are lots of other places to ride and enjoy the weekend though. Both big and small bikes can find easy or challenging terrain. I will be taking my HD Pan America and possibly a mountain bike.
I will be sleeping in a van, but feel free to set up a tent or stay in a vehicle. I’ll be arriving at Sand Flats around noon on Wednesday April 15 and departing the morning of either Sunday April 19 or Monday April 20. If you arrive on Wednesday or early on Thursday, there usually isn’t any problem finding a camping spot at Sand Flats. And if the sign at the entrance shack indicates that the campground is full, pull up to the shack and ask if you can go look for a spot. The people working the shack don’t control the sign and they’ve always told me to go in, look for a spot and come back & let them know where I’m camping.
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
