Cucharas Canyon Hike A BLM Wildlands Outing
The Cucharas River Canyon, east of Walsenburg and I-25, is unique among Colorado BLM lands. It is a prairie canyon with rugged cliffs, diverse wildlife, and remnants of early ranching history. The river canyon and side valleys have been identified by Wild Connections and BLM as Lands With Wilderness Characteristics. This moderately strenuous, on-and-off-trail, 6-mile hike with 650 feet elevation gain explores the north portion of the canyon. We will learn about the LWC program and how citizens can get involved in planning the future of BLM lands.
Due to travel time from metro areas, trailhead car camping on Friday night is recommended. This trip sponsored by Pikes Peak Group Sierra Club, Wild Connections, and Central Colorado Wilderness Coalition. Maximum 15 participants.
