Nov 15-16
with Little Hikers and Junior Explorers Committee of the Sierra Club and Crescenta Valley Group
O: Fall Family Car Camp in Vasquez Rocks This is a unique opportunity to spend the night in the land of Star Trek and the Flintstones, and many other movies. We will do a short, 2-3 mile hike along the rock formations from the nature center, visit the nature center and do nature crafts. Also a possible opportunity for a 5 mile, relatively flat hike to the seasonal stream area. Learn about the rich history of the area, and the local plants. Learn about bandit Tiburcio Vasquez, techtonic plate movement, San Andreas fault, plant adaptation to desert, why is the place called Aqua Dulce). At night there will be a wonderful opportunity to examine the night sky away from the city lights. This trip is for the whole family! This is a great trip for beginning campers and for kids. The campsite has pit toilets and is a dry campsite, which will require that you bring your own water. However, the Nature Center will be open daily from 8 AM to 4 PM where running water and flush toilets are available. You will have to bring your own water for night use. Participants will need to bring their own camping gear including tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, reusable dinnerware and cups, and whatever else you will need to be comfortable while camping. We will have a campfire and s'mores if weather permits and if the fire danger is low (as determined by the rangers and fire department). Lunch and breakfast will be on your own, Saturday will be a potluck dinner.
All minors need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian or an adult with written permission from the parents, All participants need to sign a Sierra Club liability waiver, which must be submitted at the check in at the camp.
