About this workshop:
You've finished the second draft of your poem, shared it with a critique group, friends, your cat, but now what?
David Yerex Williamson presents tips on how to fine-tune your poetry and provides insights into the submission process for competitions and publications.
Specific topics will include:
- Elements of poetry: image, form, tone, theme
- Poetic Voice: developing your own personal style
- Poetic Genre: free-verse, traditional styles, slam/spoken word, concrete poems
- Audience: writing for yourself &/or for others
- Editing: consistency of structure, form, theme
Submissions:
- To whom and why: contests and publications
- Knowing the market and where your work fits into that market
- Understanding trends and topical themes in contemporary poetry
Participants might have the opportunity to share a poem (40 lines or less) and receive feedback in a safe and supportive environment.
Presenter:
David Yerex Williamson has over twenty poetry publishing credits including in SubTerrain, FreeFall, The Dalhousie Review, The Antigonish Review, Prairie Fire and Contemporary Verse 2. His first collections, 'Through Disassembled Houses of Perfect Stones' (At Bay Press) was short-listed for a Manitoba Book Award in 2023. He has won or placed in a number of poetry competitions including the Lush Triumphant Poetry Award (SubTerrain) and Polar Expression's Best Canadian Poetry (first place, 2016. David has degrees in literature ad cultural studies and has taught literature and writing at University College of the North, Brandon University and the Universities of Manitoba and Winnipeg.
