Creating Comics is a monthly meetup, where we study the craft of drawn narratives with the goal of helping people create their own comics.
How to turn your hand drawn text into a font (on a budget)!
In this demo Kama will demonstrate how she transforms her writing into a font - on a budget! Please note that the pace might be a little fast so if you struggle, you can always go back to the recording.
First, we’ll learn a little about Kama and her work and look at some examples of Kama’s fonts in her finished comics and zines. After this, you will see how to make your own fonts! For this, you’re welcome to follow along or sit back and watch.
We start by getting a font template and writing our letters on it. You can work either digitally or on paper. Kama will be working in Procreate on iPad using an Apple Pencil.
It might be easier to watch and try it later, but if you’d like to follow along…
For digital work you will need:
- software in which you can draw, for example Procreate
- an iPad or a drawing tablet with a stylus
For working on paper:
- printer paper
- printer
- scanner or a scanner app on your phone
- a black ink pen like a micron or a brush pen, a ballpoint or pencil might also work, but it would be easier with a black ink pen
Once you have the alphabet on paper, you will scan and upload it online to a tool that will create the font. In it there are a few settings to tweak the letters and Kama will share a couple of nifty tips if there’s time! If you want to create a slightly more complex font the app also has a paid subscription, but this is optional.
There should be time at the end of the demo for questions.
The session will be presented by Kama Mielczarek (Weird is the Best):

See you there!
