Children of the Sea is an animated movie based on Daisuke Igarashi's manga of the same name.

It tells the coming-of-age story of a young girl named Ruka. One summer, she encounters two amphibious boys--Umi and Sora (meaning "Sea" and "Sky," respectively)--who were raised at sea by dugongs. Meanwhile, a planetwide singularity mysteriously begins to agitate the world's ocean life.

The movie is widely considered to be one of the most visually stunning anime of all time, culminating in a mind-blowing underwater sequence reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. But it is more than just a virtuoso exercise in the art of animation; it is also a dense meditation on the nature of existence, on humanity's larger connections to the universe, and on the cycles of birth, death, and rebirth (not necessarily in that order).
