How did America shape national identity in a time of political scandal and economic uncertainty? What stories were told and which were intentionally left out? What was actually going on with the 1976 bicentennial? Why is any of this relevant today?
In 1976, America marked its 200th anniversary of independence. The whole country celebrated with large-scale parades, fireworks, historical reenactments, and heavy nationwide programming β from a cross-country Freedom Train to tall ships filling New York Harbor like it was a maritime movie set. It was loud, visible, and everywhere. But all of this was happening during complicated moment in history. Itβs post-Vietnam and post-Watergate. Yet in a time of political divide and economic uncertainty, the country came together through massively publicized events and iconic national campaigning.
Now America is turning 250.
In this talk, public historian Luke Boyd examines how 1976 shaped national identity and what it reveals about present day America.
Luke G. Boyd is a Public Historian dedicated to making history accessible, engaging, and relevant. With over 15 years of experience across museums and National Park sites, he brings deep expertise and storytelling to every talk. π€ Lecturer: Anoush Froundjian
π Date: Thursday, June 18 @ 6:30 PM
π Location: Tribeca (exact address provided in your confirmation email)

These questions have been explored throughout history and from many perspectives. Anoush offers a creative and personal response through cartoons, storytelling, and humor.
Join us for a stimulating lecture by storyteller and cartoonist, Anoush Froundjian. Anoush explores the nuances of navigating multiple cultures β capturing the strange, funny, and deeply human moments that often feel difficult to put into words. A common thread emerges throughout her work: when youβre pressured to fit into a box, youβre also given the opportunity to design it yourself.
Throughout the evening, weβll delve into how people shape identity, use art as a lens to explore personal experiences and belonging, and create a sense of meaning out of moments that rarely fit neatly into one category.
Anoush Froundjian is a storyteller and cartoonist whose work centers on the Armenian experience in America. She creates the webcomic Anoush Talks to Stuff, where a girl speaks to inanimate objects, and co-produces the storytelling show The Armenian Power Hour. You can find her at @AnoushTalksToStuff and learn more about the show at @thearmenianpowerhour.
#### We will explore:
