Thank you for the book selection feedback!! This was another one of our most popular selections!
The Giver is a 1993 American young adult dystopian novel, set in a society which at first appears to be utopian but is revealed to be dystopian as the story progresses.
In the novel, the society has taken away pain and strife by converting to "Sameness", a plan that has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. In an effort to preserve order, the society also lacks any color, climate, terrain, and a true sense of equality. The protagonist of the story, a 12-year-old boy named Jonas, is selected to inherit the position of Receiver of Memory, the person who stores all the memories of the time before Sameness. Jonas struggles with concepts of the new emotions and things introduced to him, and whether they are inherently good, evil, or in between, and whether it is possible to have one without the other.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
Please send the event host, Sarah, a direct message saying "I'm in" (aka a message confirming that you have every intention of reading the book and attending the discussion) within 48 hours of your RSVP. This helps build the commitment - particularly if we haven't met yet!
It's available at the library, book stores, Audible, and the PDF is found at: https://fliphtml5.com/pjrhu/pezo/basic/.
This is just an opportunity to grow in our appreciation of different styles of literature and experience some novels that have importance in the culture. This book might be a bit different than what we're used to picking up (science fiction / young adult fiction).
We are certainly not going for perfection here! Even if you don't finish it, you will still be able to participate in the discussion as I always try to make the questions relatable to our own lives based on the themes. We always appreciate your attendance and your thoughts - presence over perfection :)
No need to feel shy if you’re coming alone. Most members come alone and leave with new found friendships!
Want to be an event host? It's such a fun and rewarding experience! Please message the group owner - Sarah - for further information.
Please ensure you have paid your membership dues - it is set for $2 per per person. This covers our meetup.com subscription for the year. Please send $2 to yycwomensgroup@gmail.com or bring a Toonie. Sarah is tracking in a spreadsheet. Thank you so much for everyone who has contributed!!
