September 19 - Fly to the Azores Board your flight bound for the Azores, Portugal. It's less than a 5-hour flight from the east coast USA.
September 20 - Welcome to the Green Island of the Azores Arrive in the Azores and transfer to your hotel right in the heart of Ponta Delgada. Check-in and relax or start to explore the marina. In the early evening we will have a foodie walking tour (dinner courses at different restaurants – an opportunity to visit several venues) of Ponta Delgada so you get to know the town and learn more about the products of the Azores.
September 21 - Furnas Lake, geothermal hot springs, tea plantation and 'cozido' lunch Today is a full day packed with activity as we explore the east side of São Miguel. Visit the island's tea plantation, the only major plantation in Europe. Then tour by Furnas lake where you'll hear more about the geothermal activity on the island and learn how the locals harvest this energy to cook. Visit the geothermal hot springs in Terra Nostra Garden for an optional soak in the hot, mineral waters. Then eat some of the local 'cozido' cooked in the ground using the geothermal heat. Itinerary
September 22 - Jeep tour to Sete Cidades caldera and pineapple plantation Take a Jeep tour to the Sete Cidades caldera on the west side of the island, considered one of the most photographed parts of São Miguel. Learn about the green-blue lake and how the area got its name. Then stop by one of the island's pineapple plantations and learn how this became the #1 export of the Azores.
September 23 - Free day in Ponta Delgada with a Sunset Cruise Today you have free time in Ponta Delgada. There are a few museums to visit in town, urban botanical gardens, and an old fort turned into a military museum. Take a short taxi ride to one of the nearby dark sand beaches. You may want to sign up for another activity on the island like hiking, ATV or horseback riding. In the early evening, head down to the marina for a sunset cruise.
September 24 - Lagoa do Fogo and Ribeira Grande Visit the center of the island and the Lagoa do Fogo, also referred to as the "Lake of Fire." Stop at a viewpoint where you can see both the north and south coasts of São Miguel. In the north, spend some time in Ribeira Grande and explore the traditional architecture of the Azores. Today you will also stop at Cerâmica Vieira, the local Azorean pottery factory.
September 25 - Free time and Wine & Cheese evening Last day in Ponta Delgada. Perhaps visit the Gruta do Carvão lava caves or the nearby Gin Library. If you enjoy time on the water sign up for a whale and dolphin watching boat tour. In the early evening, treat yourself to an experience of local Azorean wine and cheese at a nearby private residence and garden.
September 26 - Goodbye Azores Say goodbye to the Azores. You'll have some time this morning to shop for last minute souvenirs before your airport transfer. Safe travels!
