Overview:
Let's visit the nearby State Park and hike some hilly paths, see a part of the old El Camino Royal, visit the featured buildings, and have a picnic lunch in the day use area. The planned Route will have some challenging portions, but there are alternatives as needed.
It's a cute State Park, with nice exhibits and special events sometimes and not far from Houston area. Only drawback, from an organizers perspective, is that the tent sites are truly pad-only sites with limits. Still, great option if Ratcliff is too basic or booked and a perfect day trip!
This is part of a weekday camping and hiking trip to enjoy the Davy Crockett National Forest and the 4-C trails throughout. Day-trippers welcome, but be sure to review MeetUp in case something has come up last minute to alter plans.
Caveats:
I am by no means a professional guide, so please be responsible for your own safety, be prepared to navigate on your own, and be physically able to enjoy the hiking. All levels of experience welcome, but be sure to inform us beforehand of any accommodations or particular interests and we'll go from there.
I have no ego involved in the route or pace, so just keep me informed if you are faster or slower than the main body of the group or have other suggestions. I will strive for maximum fun!
Weather:
Average weather is pretty moderate in April, but be prepared! Temps usually range from low 50s at night to high-70s daytime. Overcast or mostly cloudy about 40% of the time. Thunderstorms and lightening possible, so watch the weather forecasts! Camping will likely continue in that case, but hikes may be re-arranged or canceled for safety.

I always recommend plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen & insect repellent as a start.
Check out hiking guidelines online for other suggestions if you are new to hiking or need a refresher. I would download the map and/or have a paper back up if you are cautious, too!
