Docker for WordPress Demo, Zoom, WordPress Cambridge Mon Sept 11th 7pm UK
Details
Monday Sept 11th on Zoom, our discussion topic is how to use (free) Docker for WordPress Website development. Once you've got the hang of Docker it's quite easy, but looks complicated. It's great that we have:
Josh Cranwell who'll demonstrate how to use the Docker Desktop app on a Mac, and how to write a perfect `docker-compose.yml` configuration file to quickly and easily spin up local Wordpress environments as projects. Josh will include these Docker topics:-
-
Docker introduction on containers, images, desktop app, settings, etc.
-
Create an empty project with a single `docker-compose.yml` file
-
Running a simple MySQL image and WordPress image
-
Docker image tags for earlier versions of WordPress
-
Persistent volume mapping
-
Advanced configurations on WordPress image
-
Running Mailhog image for capturing outgoing wp mail locally
-
Running phpMyAdmin image
-
Install from an existing theme
-
Install from an existing database dump
-
Deployment via FTP
Josh will touch on industry standard development techniques with building local Wordpress projects in Docker, and how to properly manage with git etc.
His demo aims to show you how to build new themes from the ground up in Docker, and also how to migrate existing projects or pre-paid themes into your Docker environment.
If we have time (now we know how to run Wordpress locally in Docker), Josh will quickly show you how to install Vite with NPM and how to setup Vite in Wordpress properly for super fast SCSS/JS compiling, with live browser rendering (no browser refreshing).
What's more Josh will provide everyone with a public repository link including all files and commands from the demo, so you can start Dockering straight away!
As usual we hope that people will roll up, happy to share their knowledge and expertise. Every question, suggestion & comment is welcome. Beginner questions are great, as well as questions from people who know the topic.
Everyone else will learn something, and seeing things working leaves people thinking they can also create something.
We have a wonderful crowd on Zoom, from across the USA, UK, Ireland, and Europe. Alas, we don't have enough people close to Cambridge to justify actually meeting in town. So the meetup is only on Zoom.
Thanks to Chris Cox of https://www.hihub.info/ for providing Zoom. I'll send out a recording of the meeting afterwards.
This format seems to work.
7pm: Welcome. Depending on numbers, everyone gets to introduce themselves, perhaps 10 seconds each, mainly describing their involvement with WordPress. If we have many attendees, then introductions via the chat.
7:15 pm: Start of sharing & discussion.
8.30pm The meeting kinda starts to wind up, sometimes we chat for longer. Then we decide next month's topic.
Looking forward to seeing and chatting with everyone.
Simon & Chris
