Dear All,
Typography is our discussion topic for Monday May 18th on Zoom. Yes the third Monday of this month due to organisers' schedules. There are the basics, e,g,:
- System fonts and alternatives
- Loading and preloading fonts
- Google Fonts and their implications
- Variable fonts
Because you want users to:
- Read text easily,
- Scan the page quickly
- Identify what matters from the hierarchy
- Work on mobile, tablet, desktop, and zoomed-in browsers?
Yes, but how? Maybe this will include:
- Font size vs screen size, maybe responsive typography that scales with screen size.
- Font families & font pairs i.e. what fonts and what pairs, which helps define the personality of the site.
- Accessibility & contrast for: text/background, links, hover/focus states.
- Line length, paragraph width
- Spacing: the vertical rhythm, i.e. the line height & padding for body text, and H1, H2, H3, lists, quotes, buttons, images & captions
- Font loading & system performance.
- And, how to set up these font controls in WordPress, maybe using theme.json.

This means everyone is encouraged to add to the conversation. Everyone is welcome to ask questions, and hopefully someone knows an answer. Beginner or advanced, we’re here to learn from one another. As always, our friendly regulars from the UK, Europe, and the USA will be joining in.
There is no "expert" speaker, however Chris and Simon will, as usual, start by briefly describing the issue, just to start and inspire a discussion.

7:15 PM – Open discussions with live Q&A and contributions from attendees. Feel free to share your screen.
8:30 PM – Brainstorm ideas for next month’s topic.
