NC WRITERS' NETWORK HOLIDAY SOCIAL POTLUCK Then we’ll roll into our Holiday Social Potluck for fun networking with our community of dedicated writers. Feel free to bring a beverage and/or finger food to share! KATHLEEN JEWELL – BRIEF BIO Kathleen Jewell opened Pomegranate Books in 2005 as a "midlife adventure" after 25 years of practicing medicine. She was fortunate to do her residency in Preventive Medicine at the University of Rochester, home of George Engel's bio-psycho-social model of illness. Faculty in the department included PhD anthropologist Steven Kunitz, PhD sociologist Andrew Sorensen, and English PhD Kathryn Montgomery. The department sponsored a Women's Health lecture series each year, featuring authors such as Barbara Ehrenreich. As a consequence of this training, Kathleen would often interpret medical phenomena through the lens of literature. (For instance, "PMS" took on a new meaning after reading Ntozake Shange's “Sassafras, Cypress, and Indigo” or the works of Mary Sojourner). This, coupled with her own love of the written word, prompted Kathleen to open her independent bookstore. Pomegranate Books creates a space for readers, writers and the otherwise engaged and curious to come together and share ideas in a safe and welcoming atmosphere. Moreover, Pomegranate Books supports a variety of local initiatives promoting literacy and general wellbeing.
