Details

This is a writing workshop that will focus on learning a new technique or method each month. A guest speaker will share a sample of their work and then give a writing prompt for everyone to follow.

We'll all write for 30 minutes, and then share our work with others, and receive helpful suggestions about what to improve. Bring your laptops, tablets, or notebook and pen and a willingness to learn.

We will meet on the 4th Wednesday of every month.

This month, Janna Benge, president of the Kerouac House and co-author of over 200 historic biographies will speak to the group on the subject of Start Strong.

As a writer, we only have a very small window of time to hook our readers and entice them to continue reading our work. But it is not easy to settle on a beginning. What role does genre play in our choice of beginnings? When does it work to throw all the conventional advice out and forge your own way ahead? How do you know when you have nailed the beginning of a story?

In this workshop we will explore:
# What is a strong beginning, and how to deconstruct it.
# Different beginnings which work for different genres.
We will
#Write a beginning using a prompt in our chosen genre.
# Receive and participate in group feedback.
