Welcome! The Yoga Meditation Group is a nonprofit entity in Austin, Texas, dedicated to teaching yoga in all its aspects – including meditation, philosophy, asanas, relaxation, and diet and lifestyle. Our classes and events are offered free of charge. Our teachers are volunteers. We run on donations.
We offer classes for all ages and abilities, and we are happy to bring what we teach into schools, community groups, businesses, retirement homes, and to anyone who would like to learn.

There are many styles and philosophies of yoga. This is what we teach: The word "yoga" means to "link up" or "connect"; we get the English word "yoke" from the word yoga. It is this connection that we are all looking for to find fulfillment, to understand who we are and what our purpose is, and to live in a place of lasting peace and permanence within us, untouched by the temporary, changing, uncertain world around us. Meditation is often called the heart of yoga since this is where that connection happens. The techniques are simple and enjoyable. Even children can learn and practice daily. It's also free because it belongs to all of us already.
In our meditation classes, we practice three techniques using breathing, beads, and music. All are welcome, whether you are new to meditation, currently do meditation on your own, or have done meditation in the past.

Yoga Asana is the physical practice of yoga that includes exercises, breathing, and relaxation. The purpose of Yoga Asana isn't fitness. It is, in part, to take care of the body as our vehicle; and although this may include fitness, it should never be defined by it. Yoga Asana practice gives us the opportunity to become aware of the body and the life force within the body, helping us to experience that we are not the body but rather the eternal being within the body who needs fulfillment on a level that the body cannot satisfy. This experience can then lead us to the deeper yoga practices, which are centered around meditation (the heart of yoga) and spiritual inquiry about our eternal identity and purpose. All of our meditation classes are free and are listed here on Meetup. Let us know if you have any questions. Namaste.
NOTE: We do not require masks. We believe it is important to be able to breathe freely while practicing yoga asana and meditation. If you are not comfortable with this, we have links we can send you that may be helpful in practicing at home.
