Meditation literally means "bringing into being." There are a few Buddhist terms that all get translated as meditation (bhavana, zen, jhana, chan, kammaṭṭhāna).

What can we bring into being? Serenity, relaxation, absorption, calm, loving kindness, compassion, mindfulness (sati or smrti), the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, magical powers, liberating-insight, clarity knowing-and-seeing, wisdom...

There are three roots of all problems/bad karma. They are (1) greed/clinging, (2) hatred-fear/aversion, and (3) wrong views/delusion). And there are three roots of all solutions/good karma. They are (1) sila or virtue, (2) samadhi or coherence, and (3) prajna or wisdom).

We will cultivate the foundation of compassion, which is metta or loving kindness, first with serenity then with insight.
