See the Tunnel of Death & (if you survive) Hike to Manzanita Meadow

Details

First, Bring A Jacket and a Flashlight! It's cold and dark in there!

This opening to the Netherworld is surprisingly close - less than 15 minutes from Yucaipa! And yes, that's a real photo of a friend of mine at the entrance to the Tunnel of Death. In the interest of full disclosure, there have been no deaths at this location, but when you look into its gaping maw from the outside it is nothing if not intimidating. One of my daughters came up with the name, just before she "died"...(went in and explored it.)

It's actually an easy walk through it, and the water is surprisingly clean and clear (it just looks dark because of the lack of overall lighting, I promise). I'm including it in this hike for the sheer adventure of it, after all, you're walking into the Tunnel of Death !

Frightening as it is, it's only a quick stop, although there is a steep scramble of maybe 100 yards down to and back up from it. Easy peasy, kinda sorta. Afterwards we'll go to Angelus Oaks, and hike to Manzanita Meadow from there. The destination is an open flat area about 4 miles up the San Bernardino Peak Trail.

We will meet at the Ranger Station at the corner of Hwy 38 and Bryant Street in Yucaipa at 8:00 and carpool on up from there.

Should be cool but might be warm by the end so bring plenty of water, unless you want to drink from the Water of the Tunnel of Death (which I will, btw).

Surely you must be curious by now...
