IoT Sthlm September: Connecting Chatty Things

Details

Spanning the silos by connecting chatty things.

In order to connect legacy building systems with each other, a little bit of elbow grease is required. We will have a look at how it's possible to retrofit existing systems with modern, miniaturised and cost-effective hardware (e.g. Raspberry Pi) running minimalistic software.

The project Intelligent Energy Usage http://iea.sust.se (http://iea.sust.se/) aims to create a domain and communications standard for sharing energy related information between companies and business silos.

Today, most of the connected devices are proprietary cloud solutions, creating a world of incompatible APIs. To be able to create the energy-efficient services, needed to help save the planet, you have to either license and learn everybody else's APIs or create your own hardware.

We believe that by re-using a widely spread and well established standard that already works globally, we can create an interoperable world of chatty things. This means sensors, actuators and complex equipment connected to different domains and using the XMPP chat technology as the core communication protocol.

For example:

The heat pump #46723@heatpumpcompany.com can be friends with the
energy optimizer #45628@smallstartupenergy.com, which in turn can be friends with myindoorroomtemp@lindborg.private.domain.se, creating an energy service without installing any new hardware. What we have created is the uniform XML language, which enables an interoperable world.

The evening kicks off with a few beers and snacks and then we have presentations and discussions. Test equipment running XMPP will be on display.
