Who’s ready for a hike with your dog? In response to requests that we do more Pack Walks in Suffolk County and that we offer longer walks, we have scheduled our first hike on The Pine Trail to Sandy and Grassy Ponds. This is a beautiful 4.3-mile, out-and-back hike that goes through part of the Long Island Pine Barrens. The rewarding hike is known for its sights including the remains of a very hot brush fire in the mid-1980s and two gorgeous ponds, without ever getting too far from civilization, according to the Pine Barrens Society. The trail itself is mostly flat dirt, but opens up to a short sandy area crossing the power line section.

You can expect the hike to take three hours total. Our Pack Leader suggests bringing at least one liter of water for you and your dog, including a means of dispensing the water to your dog like a collapsible bowl.

Dress appropriately for the weather, but boots and pants are recommended. Also, as ticks are ubiquitous on Long Island at this time of year, bring bug spray for yourself and tick medication/collar for your dog. We look forward to seeing you and your dog on our first hike in Suffolk County!
